Ready to elevate your photography? Join Flagpole Photographers for our hands-on Workshop Day on Saturday, May 3, 2025! Spend the day capturing the beauty of historic Newtown and Sandy Hook while learning side-by-side with our award-winning club photographers.
This engaging workshop features morning outdoor sessions focused on practical shooting techniques, followed by an afternoon indoor session diving into digital darkroom skills to make your photos shine for print and social media. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your skills, bring your camera or phone and prepare for a day of creative exploration!
Agenda Saturday, May 3, 2025
- Bad Weather Plan: In case of inclement weather, the workshop will begin indoors at the Newtown Senior Center (8 Simpson Street). Outdoor sessions will be replaced with indoor activities.*
8:50 AM – Meet & Greet
- Location: The Pleasance, 1 Main Street, Newtown
9:00 AM – Session 1: Photography Fundamentals (Outdoor)
- Focus: Achieving sharp photos (holding steady) and exploring composition (varying angles, height, distance).
- Location: The Pleasance area
9:30 AM – Session 2: Controlling Focus (Outdoor)
- Focus: Learn how aperture affects depth of field (how much is in focus) and its impact on composition.
10:00 AM – Travel Break
- Drive to Sandy Hook Center (approx. 2 miles).
- Meet: Parking Area near 7 Glen Road, Sandy Hook
10:30 AM – Session 3: Capturing Motion (Outdoor)
- Focus: Using shutter speed creatively to freeze or blur motion depending on the scene.
- Location: Sandy Hook Center area
11:00 AM – Session 4: Creative Photo Challenge
- Activity: Put your new skills to the test with a photo “Treasure Hunt.”
12:00 PM – Lunch Break (On Your Own)
- Options: Explore local Sandy Hook eateries OR bring your lunch to eat at the Senior Center.
- Activity: Review your morning photos and choose your favorite 3 to share.
- Tip: Feel free to practice food/detail shots during lunch!
1:00 PM – Session 5: Photo Review & Editing Basics (Indoor)
- Location: Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street, Newtown (Room: Studio 1)
- Activity: Share your selected photos. Watch and learn as instructors review images and demonstrate editing techniques for print and social media using participants’ photos.
2:30 PM – Workshop Concludes

Free for all Flagpole Photographer members. Fantastic Value for Non-Members: Your $25 fee includes Flagpole Photographers membership through August 31, 2025!
