Editing Skills to Know: A Live Photo Editing Program

Join the Flagpole Photographers to discover essential editing skills and see how different photographers transform a photo! This event is free and open to the public.

Watch Flagpole Photographers members Chane Cullens and Darrell Harrington as they live edit photos, each focusing on different key editing techniques. You’ll see their unique approaches and workflow using different applications. Many photo editing tools use remarkably similar sliders and concepts, so even if you don’t use the specific applications used, you’re sure to gain valuable insights and are encouraged to add to the conversation.

  • Chane Cullens & Darrell Harrington: Some of the topics covered.
    • Mastering Composition: Cropping and Straightening: Demonstrating the ease of the Windows Photos crop tool. Show how to lock aspect ratios for printing (like 8×10 or 5×7), flip photos for better visual flow, and use the straighten slider to level a tilted landscape.
    • Monochrome and Filters: Walking through the built-in filters to find a good starting point for black-and-white photos, then using the “Light” sliders (Contrast, Exposure, Highlights, Shadows) to add punch and drama to the monochrome conversion.
    • Making Subjects Pop (Background Blur & Vignette): Showing beginners how to draw the viewer’s eye exactly where they want it. This can cover the simple Vignette slider to darken the edges, and the newly added, highly effective Background Blur tool in Windows Photos to simulate a shallow depth of field.
    • The Power of ‘Auto-Enhance’ and ‘Brilliance’: Starting with the magic wand tool to show how Apple Photos guesses what needs fixing. Then, diving into the “Brilliance” slider—a unique Mac feature that intelligently applies localized contrast to make flat photos instantly look richer without over-saturating them.
    • Rescuing Details (Highlights & Shadows): Teaching beginners how to recover a blown-out, bright sky by pulling down the Highlights slider, and how to reveal hidden details in a dark foreground using the Shadows slider.
    • Quick Cleanups with the Retouch Tool: Demonstrating the built-in band-aid tool. Showing how to quickly brush over sensor dust spots in the sky, stray trash on the ground, or minor blemishes to clean up an otherwise great shot.
  • 9:00 PM – Farewell
