We’re thrilled to announce the start of our 2025 Leaders and Learners program! This popular learning opportunity connects seasoned photographers with learners for small-group, hands-on exploration of exciting photography topics. Whether you’re diving into new techniques or sharpening your skills, there’s something for everyone!

Action Figures

Program Plans

  • One meeting to discuss techniques (setups and tips/tricks) and for participants to gather items they might want to photograph.
  • One meeting to pose and photograph action figures — incorporating lighting, posing, and discussion of creating props (hands-on).
  • Included is a handout of tips/tricks and professionals to follow for inspiration/ideas.
  • Follow-up meeting to discuss photos, editing techniques, and questions.

Birds

Composition & Framing

Program Plans

  • One or two meetings to go over common composition “rules” and techniques. (Leading Lines, Rule of Thirds, Rule of Odds, Symmetry, Framing etc.)
  • A group “field trip” around town to look for and photograph images using techniques learned.
  • Participants practice concepts on their own.
  • Follow up meeting to review photos taken and address further questions.

Program Plans

  • One or two online meetings for tips and tricks on zoo photos with special notes on using zoo photos for Nature competition.
  • One or two field trips to zoos to practice. Destinations to be discussed by the team. The Bronx Zoo has many opportunities and consumes most of a day. The Beardsley Zoo is closer and might be a good practice trip before Bronx Zoo.
  • Note: It’s still winter and field trips will be outside.
